We were born around 1949-1950. We have lived in 7-8 decades, 2 centuries and 2 millenniums. We had the best music, fastest cars, drive-in theaters and soda fountains with spinning stools. We sang Monday, Monday before there were Monday blues. We were the beginning of the Hanky Panky and the Wooly Bully. We could Paint it Black or go Groovin with the best of them. We could Dance to a Different Drum or go strolling in the Rose Garden. Cheech & Chong, The Smothers Brothers and George Carlin made us laugh and made us think. Laugh In made "sock it to me" a catch phrase. We know that the symbol # has more than one meaning and that OMG dates back to 1917. We could turn our black and white televisions on/off without a remote and only talk on a phone if it was attached to a cord. Cell phones and computers, not yet invented, but on our radar. So the world was a journey to be taken. Yes. literally. We had to get in a car to make the journey. No such thing as cruising the internet. Our music was mostly rock ‘n’ roll and cowboy 2 step, we removed our shoes at sock hops, could jitterbug, shake rattle and roll, hand jive, stroll, twist, mash potato and Bristol stomp. But most of all we are the generation that started so much, invented the newest and coolest, gave way to new trends and believed that we could do anything that we wanted. Don’t ever sell us short. We may be old school, we may be getting older, but we are still WAY COOL!
A self-important college freshman attending a recent football game took it upon himself to explain to a senior citizen (that would be one of us) sitting next to him why it was impossible for the older generation to understand his generation.
'You grew up in a different world, actually an almost PRIMITIVE one,' the student said, loud enough for many of those nearby to hear. 'The young people of today are much more advanced than people your age. We grew up with television, jet planes, space travel, man walking on the moon and the Internet. We have cell phones, nuclear energy, electric and hydrogen cars, computers, automated manufacturing, amazing technologies,...and,' pausing to take another drink of beer.
The senior took advantage of the break in the student's litany and said,
You're right, son. We didn't have those things when we were young.... So we invented them. That includes those running shoes, high tech baby strollers and car seats, the code that makes your cell phone work, solar & wind energy, and so many other things that make your life so much less "PRIMITIVE". Now, you arrogant little twit, what are YOU doing for the next generation?
The applause was resounding...
